     What is burglary resistance?

A burglar resistant safe is the last barrier between the burglar and your valuables, and its primary function is to win time. The safes are specially designed to protect the contents from external attack, and they can be classified by the degree of resistance they offer. The grade depends on various factors, like the thickness and sort of metal, the number of locks and delaying elements which have been included in the walls.

     Cash, valuables ratings and cover
The resistance grade can also be expressed as cash and valuables ratings. The term indicates how much cash or the value or valuables is covered by the insurance if they are stored in the safe. The higher the value given, the more burglar resistant the safe is.
If additional security measures have been taken, like an alarm, the insurer may increase the amount covered. We would, therefore, advise you to contact your insurance company to find out how much your valuables in your safe are insured for and if the cash and valuables ratings are higher or lower than had been set previously.

Cash and valuable ratings may differ from country to country.  In the UK,  suggested maximum cash limits according to grade are:

     Grade 0  = up to £6,000
     Grade I    = up to £10,000
Grade II   = up to £17,500
Grade III = up to £35,000
Grade IV = up to £60,000

     Grade V   = up to £100,000
Grade VI  = £150,000 and upwards*

(*, please contact your insurer for more detailed information)

Cash is infinitely more attractive to thieves. Stolen goods must be disposed of, frequently at a fraction of their normal value. Therefore, when considering the security of valuables rather than cash, particularly in a domestic situation, it is customary for the underwriter to multiply the safe’s recommended cash holding by a certain factor, and this can be as high as ten times the normal cash limit. Consequently, a safe certified Grade I and recommended for a cash limit of £10,000 cash may often be insured for up to £100,000 in jewellery or valuables.

Free-standing burglar resistant safes with a weight or less than 1,000 kg must be anchored to a wall or floor to comply with the European standard. Only then are your valuables indeed protected from theft. The insurance policy also requires solid anchoring.

     Standards
Good burglar resistant safes and cabinets have been tested by European standards like EN 14450 and EN 1143-1. Experts attacked the safes in the tests with the relevant skills and tools as set out in the standards.

  • EN 1143-1 (Grade 0 to Grade VI):
'Grade' is also sometimes called 'Class' or 'CEN'. The levels are indicated by zero or a Roman numeral (0 to VI) standard for deposit safes. The entire deposit safe (including the deposit facility) is tested for burglar resistance.

  • EN 14450 (S1 and S2):
Burglar resistant safes to this standard are particularly suitable for daily deposits and domestic use.
Standard EN 14450 regulates test methods for safes and strongboxes. A distinction is made between security levels S 1 and S 2. The security requirements of this standard are lower than those of EN 1143-1 but higher than the requirements of VDMA 24992.
